Malik — After Raï
Xavier (1/4 of Maybe Tonight) and I met Malik Adouane in Montparnasse, Paris. For those who don’t know him, he is one of the first - if not the first - musicians to blend oriental and house/club oriented music together. Back then, Malik was always attentive to what was upcoming in terms of music, especially electronic music.
He told us that by the end of the 80s, he was in New York, visiting and partying a lot. One day, Malik went to the Fun House, a mythic club in Manhattan when he suddenly heard the Algerian national anthem mixed with a house beat. This drove him crazy and he decided to see who this adventurous DJ was… He asked to the dj his name, the guy said : “Mark Kamins”.
Mark was part of the New-York Club scene mainly during the 80s. He had residencies as a DJ in several clubs like Danceteria, the Tunnel and Trax and produced big names such as David Byrne, Marcel King and The Beastie Boys just to name a few. Mark was also known for being Madonna’s ex-boyfriend and for producing her first ever single called “Everybody”.
That particular moment in the club that night was something special for Malik. It was the late 80s, and at the same time (1986), the first ever musical event focused on Raï music appeared in Bobigny (France) with Raï stars such as Cheikha Rimitti, Cheb Mami, Khaled, Sahraoui & Fadéla, and many more… So hearing the Algerian national anthem mixed with house music in a New York club was really intense for Malik !
Malik gave Mark a tape that night, with some unfinished work. Later on, Malik went to Mark’s studio and a friendship was born between these two men.
“Cheb Mark” went to France a few years after to visit Malik, and they worked together and put out some music…Some crazy video clips are up on YT on Malik’s channel, worth the watch if you’re curious :)
